“I Am Getting Out of the Way” Lyrics
Album: Entre el Amor y Yo (Between Love and Me), 1998
Genre: Orchestral mariachi song about unrequited love during a breakup, asking the other person not to forget them.
Country: Mexico
Lyrics Translation:
Si nuestro amor se acaba,
Si nuestro amor termina,
Ya no me queda nada
Para vivir la vida.
If our love is at an end,
If our love is finished,
Now I have nothing left
To keep on living.
Si ya olvidaste todo,
También tus juramentos,
Y llenaste de lodo
Mi mundo de recuerdos.
If you’ve forgotten everything now,
Even your promises,
And you’ve filled with mud
My world of memories.
Nomás por tu soberbia
No das explicaciones,
Encima me condenas
Sin escuchar razones.
Due to naught but pride,
You give no explanations,
Moreover you condemn me
Without listening to reasons.
Si terminar conmigo
Ya lo venías pensando,
Déjame estar contigo
Aunque no esté a tu lado.
If breaking up with me
Was already on your mind,
Let me be with you
Even if I am not by your side.
Si me dejas, no me olvides,
Por favor, nunca me olvides.
Tú sabes cuánto te quiero,
Que desde siempre te quise.
If you leave me, don’t forget me,
Please, never forget me.
You know how much I love you,
How I’ve loved you since forever.
Si me dejas, no me olvides,
Por favor, nunca me olvides.
Me voy a quitar de en medio,
¿Qué más quieres?
¿Qué más pides?
If you leave me, don’t forget me,
Please, never forget me.
I am getting out of the way,
What more do you want?
What more do you ask?
Nomás por tu soberbia
No das explicaciones,
Encima me condenas
Sin escuchar razones.
Due to naught but pride,
You give no explanations,
Moreover you condemn me
Without listening to reasons.
Si terminar conmigo
Ya lo venías pensando,
Déjame estar contigo
Aunque no esté a tu lado.
If breaking up with me
Was already on your mind,
Let me be with you
Even if I am not by your side.
Si me dejas, no me olvides,
Por favor, nunca me olvides.
Tú sabes cuánto te quiero,
Que desde siempre te quise.
If you leave me, don’t forget me,
Please, never forget me.
You know how much I love you,
How I’ve loved you since forever.
Si me dejas, no me olvides,
Por favor, nunca me olvides.
Me voy a quitar de en medio,
¿Qué más quieres?
¿Qué más pides?
If you leave me, don’t forget me,
Please, never forget me.
I am getting out of the way,
What more do you want?
What more do you ask?
Translation Notes:
This song was also re-released in album Un Azteca en el Azteca (An Aztec in the Aztec Stadium), 2016.
Si nuestro amor se acaba,
Si nuestro amor termina
If our love is at an end,
If our love is finished
This is two ways to say the same thing, said twice for emphasis and to draw out the thought. The singer is still coming to terms with the breakup.
Y llenaste de lodo
Mi mundo de recuerdos.
And you’ve filled with mud
My world of memories.
The singer’s formerly happy memories about their relationship are now bittersweet, muddy, complicated.
Nomás por tu soberbia
No das explicaciones,
Encima me condenas
Sin escuchar razones.
Due to naught but pride,
You give no explanations,
Moreover you condemn me
Without listening to reasons.
For nothing but your haughtiness/pride,
You won’t give explanations [for the breakup],
And what’s more, you condemn me
Without listening to anything [I say in response].
This stanza explains how the breakup occurred. The singer’s ex broke up with him abruptly, didn’t really explain why, and seemed to blame him but didn’t want to discuss it.
Si terminar conmigo
Ya lo venías pensando…
If breaking up with me
Was already on your mind…
I breaking up with me
Already you were thinking about…
The singer thinks that she had been thinking about breaking up with him for a while, based on how quickly and suddenly it happened. She just had not decided when to do it.
..Déjame estar contigo
Aunque no esté a tu lado.
…Let me be with you
Even if I am not by your side.
The singer is trying to negotiate with her, asking her not to break up with him and maybe to just take a break from each other instead.
Si me dejas, no me olvides,
Por favor, nunca me olvides.
Me voy a quitar de en medio,
¿Qué más quieres?
¿Qué más pides?
If you leave me, don’t forget me,
Please, never forget me.
I am getting out of the way,
What more do you want?
What more do you ask?
The singer is telling her that he will leave to give her space, but to please not forget about him. He is grieving the relationship, partially in the bargaining stage (hoping that a temporary break will be enough) and partially accepting it (knowing there’s nothing more that he can do). He asks her not to just forget about him. He still loves her.
