“Se Murió De Amor” (He Died of Love) by Bobby Pulido, English translation

“He Died of Love” Lyrics
Album: Enséñame (Teach Me), 1996
Style: Romantic country song. Love song declaring that he wants to be with his sweetheart forever, that his sweetheart made him so happy, and that their absence makes him feel so alone. He wants to be with them forever, even if it leads to future pain. When the time comes, let them write on his tomb that he died of love.
Country: USA (Texas)

Lyrics Translation:

Take me with you,
Even if I will feel pain,
Because on my tomb, I want it to say,
This man died of love.

Yo contigo fui feliz,
Compartiendo nuestro tierno amor,
Me haces tanta falta tú,
Necesito mucho tu calor,

With you, I was happy,
Together sharing our tender love,
But now that you are not here, there is only pain.
I really feel you absence,
I need your warmth so much,
I am just a lost soul without your love.

[Chorus:]

Take me (with you),
Even if I will feel pain,
Because on my tomb, I want it to say,
This man died of love.

Take me (with you),
Don’t leave me alone please,
Because on my tomb, I want it to say,
This man died of love.

Yo contigo fui feliz,
Compartiendo nuestro tierno amor,
Me haces tanta falta tú,
Necesito mucho tu calor,

With you, I was happy,
Together sharing our tender love,
But now that you are not here, there is only pain.
I really feel you absence,
I need your warmth so much,
I am just a lost soul without your love.

[Chorus x2]

Este hombre se murió de amor…
Yo contigo fui feliz.

This man died of love…
With you, I was happy.

Translation Notes:

Yo contigo fui feliz

With you, I was happy
I, with you, was happy [*literal syntax]

This song is about the joy and intense love he felt for a person, but also the pain of losing that. The reason for the loss isn’t stated, but I think it is either a long-distance move or much more likely death. He sings about being so happy with his sweetheart, about them no longer being around, and asks them to take him also (even if it’s painful). The tone isn’t suicidal, though. The underlying tone of the song is romantic and about how much he loved this person.

It sounds more like a reference to Broken Heart Syndrome or The Widowhood Effect, where one person dies and then within a short time their spouse also dies. It is caused by intense grief affecting the heart. He is saying that if that happens to him, let them write on his gravestone that he died full of love.

This song reminds me a little of “Nuestro Juramento” by Julio Jaramillo, also sung by La Santa Cecilia.
