“The Law of Retirement” Lyrics Translation
Album: Eusebio, 2008
Style: Slow, soft song with accordions in the background. This song was used in the soundtrack of a romantic comedy-drama film titled Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008).
Country: Spain (Barcelona)
Listen: YouTube

Translation:

La ley del retiro
Y en el olvido, olvidé
Qué yo había sido.

The law of retirement
And in oblivion, I forgot
What I had been.

Dejé
Callar mis sentidos después,
Después del silencio impuesto por ley.

I let
Quiet my senses after,
After the silence imposed by law.

————————
Ley del retiro,
Secreto, castigo.

The law of retirement,
Secret, punishment.
————————
[x2]

[Chorus:]

La ley del retiro
Que doblega a los míos.

The law of retirement
That makes my own fold over (lit. bow down).

La ley del retiro
Y sus grandes motivos.

The law of retirement
And its great motives.

La ley del retiro,
De secretos prohibidos.

The law of retirement,
Of forbidden secrets.

La ley del retiro.

The law of retirement.

[Chorus]

Translation Notes:

el retiro, noun = retirement

In this case, physical retirement (e.g. I retire to my room), not job retirement.

La ley del retiro / Que doblega a los míos.

The law of retirement / That makes my own fold over (bow down).
The law of retirement / That makes mine bow. [*literal]
The law of retirement / That makes my own bow. [*literal]
The law of retirement / That makes my people bow. [*alternative]

doblegar (verb) = to bow down
los míos = mine (noun); my own (noun)

I am not actually sure what she is referring to when she says “mine,” but sometimes when people say this without referencing anything, they are talking about their people.
