“Ana” Lyrics Translation
Album: Maná: MTV Unplugged, 1999
Style: Accoustic rock. Story of teen tragedy. Ana is a teen with an unplanned pregnancy, she knows her parents won’t support her, and she’s feeling real desperate.
Country: Mexico

Translation:

Ana tiene quince.
Niña se le vino un problemón.
Algo está creciendo,
En su vientre hay algo en expansión.

Ana is fifteen.
Girl finds herself with a huge problem.
Something is growing,
In her womb something expanding.

El culpable ya huyó.
Pobre Ana sola se quedó.
No le duele tanto eso,
Sino que lo niegue el maricón.

The culprit already fled.
Poor Ana was left alone.
Not that this hurts her very much,
So much that the bastard denies it.

Ana no lo cuenta.
Ana llueve llantos en su colchón,
Y hay que ser discreta,
Ropa suelta esconde la ocasión.

Ana doesn’t tell stories.
Ana rains sobs on her mattress,
And one has to be discrete,
Loose clothing hides the occasion.

Se siente morir.
Pobre Ana no quiere vivir.

She feels like dying.
Poor Ana doesn’t want to live.

Si en casa la descubren,
La corren, la azotan, la matan.

If they discover her at home,
They’ll chase her out, whip her, kill her.

Ana se irá algún día.
Se irá para siempre.
Ana se irá de este mundo,
Se irá al jamás.

(x2)

Ana will leave one day.
She will leave forever.
Ana will leave this world.
She will leave to never.
(x2)

No, no, no.

Por cierto en casa de Ana,
Claro nunca hubo comprensión.
Lo que más lamenta Ana
Es que nunca hubo educación.

Speaking of Ana’s house,
Of course there was never understanding.
What Ana laments most
Is that there was never education.

Y en desesperación
La vida de Ana se esfumaba.
Y todo por que aquel día,
El globito y la conciencia se
Quedaron en un cajón.

And in desperation
Ana’s life was disappearing.
And all because on that one day,
The small balloon and consciousness
Stayed behind in a drawer.

Ana se irá algún día.
Se irá para siempre.
Ana se irá de este mundo.
Se irá al jamás.

(x2)

Ana will leave one day.
She will leave forever.
Ana will leave this world.
She will leave to never.
(x2)

Se irá, se irá, se irá, se irá al jamás…
She will leave, she will leave, she will leave to never…

Translation Notes:

This song was originally translated sometime 2005-2006. It was posted on my old Geocities site, then my LiveJournal, then finally moved to songlations.com.

Niña se le vino un problemón.
Girl finds herself with a huge problem.

(Niña) (se le vino) (un problemón).
(Girl) (it came to her) (a huge problem).

problemón = problema + -ón
In Spanish, the suffix –ón is often used for verbal emphasis to mean “huge.”

No le duele tanto eso, sino que lo niegue el maricón.
Not that this hurts her very much, so much that the bastard denies it. [*translation is contextual, not literal]

maricón = gay man, homo, queen, fag(?); sissy; bastard

This is one of those words that started as a slur for gay men, but whose usage now varies between friendly neutral (no bad intention, said between friends) to dull insult (not very strong) to inflammatory name-calling (very offensive slur). It is also used as a more general insult (just as slurs in English may be used as general insults) and that is how I chose to translate it. Here, it is probably meant to emasculate the guy who got Ana pregnant, but it does not have the same intensity as English slurs for “gay.” Please do not start using this word and then tell people that you did not mean it “that way,” as the reactions you get could be anything from indifference to a punch in the face. If you yourself are gay, it’s your word, so feel free once you are more fluent in Spanish I guess. Just make sure you find out what the connotations are in your geographic location first. Also be cautious of generational differences and please be kind to elderly gays who may not want reclaim it.

Y hay que ser discreta = And one must be discrete

It is an impersonal sounding phrase, showing that Ana is trying to think rationally (at least about hiding). We know that “one” refers to Ana because discreta is feminine.

Se irá al jamás = She will leave to never.

Jamás typically means “never.”
It is saying that Ana will just leave and fade away as if she never existed.

Y todo por que aquel día,
El globito y la conciencia se quedaron en un cajón.

And all because on that one day,
The small balloon and consciousness stayed behind in a drawer.

el globito [noun] = a euphemism for condom
la conciencia [noun] = clear thinking, consciousness

Ana se irá algún día
Ana will leave one day
Ana will leave someday [alt.]
