Lyrics Translation:
Sirvanme otra pa’ olvidarlo
Porque aqui lo traigo adentro
Y de mi quiero arrancarlo.
Serve me another to forget him
Because I carry him here inside me
And from inside me I want to tear him out.
Diganme como le hago,
Me consume el sentimiento,
Le he llorado demasiado.
Tell me how I do it,
The emotions consume me,
I have cried for him too much.
Porque ya lo perdoné,
Una y otra y otra y otra vez,
Pero sigue siendo el mismo:
Necio, mentiroso, engreido, vanidoso,
Borracho, orgulloso.
Cree que sigue siendo el rey.
Because I already forgave him,
Once and again and again and once again,
But he continues being the same:
Stubborn, a liar, arrogant, vain,
Drunk, proud.
He thinks he continues being the king.
Pero se acabó tu tonta,
Ahi te dejo mi desprecio,
No me volveras a ver.
But your dummy has reached her end,
I leave you my disdain there,
Do not come see me again.
Y ya no vuelvas,
No vuelvas, no vuelvas, no vuelvas.
Ya te he perdonado mil veces
Y ya me cansé de ti.
And do not return anymore,
Do not return, do not, do not return.
I have already forgiven you a thousand times
And I am tired of you now.
Sera el sereno,
En ti ya no hay nada de bueno,
Ya no me haces falta aqui.
It must be the moment of clarity,
In you there is nothing good left,
You aren’t required here anymore.
Vamos aclarando el punto,
Ya pasé este trago amargo,
Te presento a tu reemplazo.
Let us make the point clear,
I gulped down this bitter drink,
And I present you your replacement.
Y ya no vuelvas,
No vuelvas, no vuelvas, no vuelvas.
Ya te he perdonado mil veces
Y ya me cansé de ti.
(x2)
And do not return anymore,
Do not return, do not, do not return.
I have already forgiven you a thousand times
And I am tired of you now.
(x2)
Sera el sereno,
En ti ya no hay nada de bueno,
Ya no me haces falta aqui.
It must be the moment of clarity,
In you there is nothing good left,
You aren’t required here anymore.
Translation Notes:
Album title:
Amor Como en las Películas de Antes
Love Like in the Old Movies
Love Like in the Movies from Before [*literally]
Pero sigue siendo el mismo:
Necio, mentiroso, engreido, vanidoso,
Borracho, orgulloso.
Cree que sigue siendo el rey.
But he continues being the same:
Stubborn, a liar, arrogant, vain,
Drunk, proud.
He thinks he continues being the king.
Lupita Infante references the classic well-known ranchera song “El Rey” (The King) by José Alfredo Jiménez. That song is about a breakup from the man’s perspective, where he sings about how great he is and how his ex will be sad without him:
Dirás que no me quisiste,
Pero vas a estar muy triste
Y así te vas a quedar. You will say that you did not love me,
But you will be very sad
And that is how you will stay.
And the man continues to sing that although he is alone now, he continues being the king. Lupita Infante directly references this specific line, underlined:
No tengo trono ni reina
Ni nadie que me comprenda
Pero sigo siendo el rey.I have no throne or queen
“El Rey” (The King) by José Alfredo Jiménez, Songlations.com
Nor anyone who understands me
But I continue being king.
Lupita Infante is both responding to that and also paying homage. “El Rey” is a popular and classic Mexican song. Her song here is playing on the same scenario, the same breakup, but telling the woman’s story instead. She is throwing shade at the machismo in old rancheras, but it comes from a place of love for the genre. José Alfredo Jiménez loved to reference his own lyrics in other songs, too, and certain phrases such as “el rey” have become memes within the genre. Ranchera audiences love these cross-song references. It is fun to imagine the Ranchera Extended Universe where ex-lovers sing about each other in different bars and you hear two sides of the same story.
