Lyrics Translation:

No es real, yo pensar,
Que amar limitaba hasta ahí.
No volaba sin ti.

It isn’t real, I thought,
That loving stopped just before that.
I couldn’t fly without you.

Tú llegaste a cambiar,
A enseñarme que sí puedo llegar
,
A verme en alguien más, mmm-mmm-mmm.

You came to change (that),
To teach me that I can get there,
To see myself in another, mmm-mmm-mmm.

Admito que es real,
Me enseñaste que el amor
Es infinito y que
Me busque más.

I admit that it is real,
You taught me that love
Is infinite and that
I should seek more.

Ya no duele nada,
Llenas de morfina mi inseguridad,
Dulce eternidad, mmm-mmm-mmm
.

Nothing hurts now,
You fill my insecurities with morphine,
Sweet eternity, mmm-mmm-mmm.

Es verdad,
Te amará, mi alma,
Cuando mi cabeza deje de pensar,
Cuando no haya tiempo
Y este corazón deje de palpitar, mmm-mmm
,
Deje de palpitar
.

It is true,
I will love you, my soulmate,
When my head stops thinking,
When there is no time (left)
And this heart stops beating, mmm-mmm,
Stops beating.

Yo quiero que me entierren
Junto a ti,
Bajo el sauce que sembramos,
Que nos junte la raíz,
En amor siempre empatarnos,
Enlazarnos hasta el fin,
Ascender junto a ti,
Junto a ti
.

I want them to bury me
Next to you,
Below the willow tree that we planted,
Let its roots join us together,
In love we will always tie,
Connected until the end,
Ascending next to you,
Next to you.

Y aceptamos nuestro fin,
Nada malo a tu lado,
Sentarnos a existir,
Y empalagarnos de amarnos tanto.

And we accept our end,
Nothing wrong by your side,
Let us sit still and exist,
And wear each other out with love.

Fue nuclear coincidir,
Al contacto detonamos,
No nos preocupamos,
Nadie nos detiene a los dos.

It was nuclear to coincide together,
On touching we detonated,
We don’t worry ourselves,
No one can stop us two.

Cuando estamos juntos
Siento cómo el mundo gira alrededor.
Cuando tú me abrazas
Siento que le quitas el calor al sol,
Morfina a mi dolor, mmm.

When we are together
I feel like the world revolves around us.
When you hug me
I feel that you pull some of the heat from the sun,
Morphine for my pain, mmm.

Y estoy yo,
Aquí y en otra vida,
Para protegerte siempre del dolor,
Sostenerte fuerte
Y cuando estés abajo ser tu propulsor
,
Ser morfina a tu dolor.

And (now) I am,
Here in another life,
To protect you always from pain,
To keep you strong
And when you are below, to be your fuel,
To be the morphine for your pain.

Tu morfina, mi morfina,
Háblame mientras termina,
Endorfina que me arruina,
Me apendeja, me da vida
.
(x2)

Your morphine, my morphine,
Talk to me while it ends,
Endorphins that wreck me,
Make me dumb, give me life.
(x2)

[Final phone call:]
Ahí cualquier cosa me hablas,
Bye
.

How’s it going, son?
I’m coming from the office.
I bought menudo and bbq for your mom.
Um, everything good, son, everything in order.
I want to see you, son, and
And I’m here listening to your posts every day.
Um, I love you, shortie,
You need anything, you call me,
Bye.

Translation Notes:

No es real, yo [solía] pensar,
Que amar limitaba hasta ahí.

It isn’t real, I thought / I [used to] think,
That loving stopped just before that.

The first lyrics line says “yo pensar” which is not grammatically correct, but it becomes correct if you mentally add the word solía (used to) in the middle. The song begins in a stream of consciousness, like someone thinking back to early memories.

Tú llegaste a cambiar [eso / mi mente],
A enseñarme que sí puedo llegar

You came to change [that / my mind],
To teach me that I can get there

Similarly, “you came to change…” is left as an unfinished thought. The singer is still deep in memory, not fully articulating what they are saying.

Admito que es real…

I admit that it is real…

The song takes off with this line. Suddenly, the singer’s voice becomes stronger as they admit that true love exists. This revelation was life-changing for them. The period before that is murky and opaque (and the lyrics are mumbled), but everything is brighter and louder after this line.

Es verdad,
Te amará, mi alma

It is true,
I will love you, my soulmate

The feminine noun alma (soul) is part of a group of irregular Spanish nouns. They end with the letter “a”, which typically signifies feminine nouns, but they also begin with an “a” sound, so Spanish grammar rules say that they use the masculine “the” (el instead of la) and the masculine “an” (un instead of una). Eagle is another example, el águila. Both nouns are still feminine but treated as masculine whenever necessary to avoid the double a-a from la a— or una a—.

Similarly, y (and) becomes e when in front of an “i-” or “hi-” word. For example, corazón e hígado (heart and liver). Spanish does NOT like duplicating the same vowel sounds.

Yo quiero que me entierren
Junto a ti,
Bajo el sauce que sembramos,
Que nos junte la raíz,
En amor siempre empatarnos

I want them to bury me
Next to you,
Below the willow tree that we planted,
Let its roots join us together,
In love we will always tie

The singer wants them to spend their whole lives together and, when they die, to decay next to each other, returning to the same earth.

Also, I might be reading too much into this, but I wonder if the word empatarnos (to match/tie each other) was used because it contains the word pata (leg/foot), therefore poetically indicating that their feet could touch when they were dead and buried, and that they would be physically touching for eternity? I am 99% sure that I am reading too much into it, but also 5-10% convinced that earlier lyrics drafts used the word pata instead, and the line was changed to use empatarnos instead. The word pata isn’t romantic enough because it typically refers to animal legs/feet. Just my poetic intuition, based on nothing else except that the singer likes speaking about them being together.

Y aceptamos nuestro fin,
Nada malo a tu lado

And we accept our end,
Nothing wrong by your side

See? The singer thinks that being buried together is romantic. This is how they will accept the death of their loved one and avoid feeling alone.

Sentarnos a existir,
Y {empalagarnos} de amarnos tanto.

Let us sit still and exist,
And {wear each other out} with love

And {tire each other out} with how much we love each other [*more literal]

This last line is tongue-in-cheek. The singer is not actually getting tired of loving their life partner. He is saying that they would enjoy spending so much time together, loving each other, that anyone else could get tired of it, but not them. They both enjoy sitting together, existing together.

Fue nuclear coincidir,
Al contacto detonamos

It was nuclear to coincide together,
On touching we detonated

These lines are poetic. I have never heard anyone else say “fue nuclear…” but I understand what they mean. The singer and their life partner are like two atoms colliding, unlikely that they would meet at just the right time and hit it off just right, but their meeting was spectacular and changed both their lives.

Cuando tú me abrazas
Siento que le quitas el calor al sol

When you hug me
I feel that you pull some of the heat from the sun
I feel that you take heat from the sun [*more literal]

The singer is telling his loved one that their hugs feel so warm and powerful. They are both the sun in this scenario, since the previous line says they feel like the world revolves around them when they are together.

Y estoy yo,
Aquí y en otra vida,
Para protegerte siempre del dolor

And (now) I am,
Here in another life,
To protect you always from pain

The lyrics take us on a journey through a couple’s lifespan. At this stanza, they are both older and in another stage of their lives (“here in another life”). The singer’s loved one is in poor health and not doing well. The singer tells them that he will protect them.

Sostenerte fuerte
Y cuando estés abajo ser tu propulsor
,
Ser morfina a tu dolor.

To keep you strong
And when you are below, to be your fuel,
To be the morphine for your pain.

The singer’s loved one is dying now. The singer vows to stand strong, hold them up, and do what they can to fight their pain. Per the song, morphine is a metaphor for love. The couple holds on to their love as a way of overcoming physical pain.

Tu morfina, mi morfina,
Háblame mientras termina

Your morphine, my morphine,
Talk to me while it ends

We jump again in time and now the singer himself is dying. As his life fades, he tells his loved one (now gone) that their memories are morphine for his own pain.

¿Qué onda, hijo?
Vengo de la oficina.
..

How’s it going, son?
I’m coming from the office…

The two lovers are now both gone, but not forgotten. The last thing we hear is a voicemail message that the singer left for his son. It is a very mundane message, just telling him that he is heading home, that he picked up food, and to please check in if he needs anything. This recoding is probably something that the son treasures now that his parents are gone.

And damn, Humbe, you make me cry. I am going to go tell my parents I love them once my tears slow down.
