“Stupid”
Singer: Linda “La India” Viera Caballero
Style: Pop with salsa influence, about a lying boyfriend and feeling dumb for falling for them.
Country: Puerto Rico
Lyrics Translation:
Qué estúpida te ves.
Sera ingenuidad.
Hay cosas en la vida que
No se pueden aceptar.
How stupid you look.
It must be some ingenuity.
There are things in life that
Cannot be accepted.
Más estúpida serás
Si no sabes renunciar.
Hay amores tan inútiles
Y que hacen daño.
You will be even more stupid
If you do not know how to abandon (a love).
There are loves so useless
That they cause harm.
Yo fui estúpida también,
Estúpida como nunca,
Hablándole al espejo y no
A la persona justa.
I was stupid, too,
Stupid like never (before),
Talking to the mirror and not
To the proper person.
Y más estúpida serás
Si un día tú te rindes.
Ya sabes que él te habla siempre,
Te jura y miente siempre.
And you will be even more stupid
If one day you surrender.
You know that he talks to you always,
He swears to you and lies to you always.
Chorus:
———————————————-
Y te mentira siempre,
Y te engañara siempre,
Porque lo ha hecho siempre,
Y será así por siempre.
And he lies to you always,
And he deceives you always,
Because he has done it always,
And he will be like that always.
Ha llegado el momento
Que le digas, “Lo siento hasta hoy, amor.”
The moment has come
For you to tell him, “I am sorry now, love.”
———————————————-/Chorus
Que le digas, “Ya no siento amor.”
For you to tell him, “I no longer feel love.”
Qué estúpida tú eres,
Hoy quieres arriesgar,
Entre poesías soñando,
Y así no vas a despertar.
How stupid you are,
Today you want to risk it,
Dreaming between poems,
And you will not wake up like that.
Si un día por ironía,
Volverías al vuelo,
Tendrás que volar muy alto
Para tocar el cielo.
If one day for irony,
You returned to flight,
You would have to fly very high
To touch the sky.
Y qué estúpida te ves
Siempre con excusas,
Desnuda frente al espejo y no
Con la persona justa.
And how stupid you look,
Always with excuses,
Naked in front of the mirror and not
With the proper person.
Y por estúpida que eres,
Hasta tú misma te mientes.
Él se siente satisfecho.
Sabes que ha mentido y miente. [*past and present tense]
And for being so stupid,
You even lie to yourself.
He feels satisfied.
You know that he has lied and lies.
–Coda–
—————————————————————
[Chorus: “Y te mentira siempre…“]
Que le digas, “Amor, yo no soy estúpida… estúpida!”
For you to tell him, “Love, I am not stupid… stupid!”
Librate para siempre.
Ha llegado el momento
Que le digas, “Lo siento hasta hoy amor,”
Que le digas, “Yo no soy, mi amor, una estúpida.”
Free yourself forever.
The moment has come
For you to tell him, “I am sorry now, love,”
For you to tell him, “I am not, my love, a stupid girl.”
—————————————————————/Coda
Oh no seas una estúpida.
Sabes bien que te miente.
Cambia hoy para siempre.
Sabes que ha mentido y miente.
Oh, do not be a stupid girl.
You know very well that he lies to you.
Change now forever.
You know that he has lied and lies.
[Repeat from coda, including chorus at beginning]
Translation Notes:
La India means “The Indian.” It is a nickname in reference to the singer’s looks.
—
Que le digas, “Lo siento hasta hoy amor.”
For you to tell him, “I am sorry now, love.”
That you tell him, “I am sorry until today, love.” [lit.]
That you tell him, “I feel it up to today, love.” [extremely unlikely lit.; not double-meaning]
I probably should not even include the last literal interpretation (“I feel it…”), but I thought people might be confused about the “hasta hoy” part and looking for another meaning. Don’t look for that one. Lo siento hasta hoy means either that she is sorry for everything up to that point (interesting, but I do not think so) or that she is finally sorry now (what I think she means).
