“Historia de un Sueño” by La Oreja de Van Gogh

“Story of a Dream” Lyrics
Album: Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida (What I Told You When You Pretended to Sleep), 2003
Style: Love after death theme with a children’s song feel. This song makes me tear up a bit. It’s so bittersweet. ♥
Country: Spain
Listen: YouTube

Translation:

Forgive me for entering without warning.
This isn’t the time and even less the place.
I had to tell you that it isn’t so bad up in heaven.

Tomorrow you won’t even remember,
“It was only a dream,” you will repeat to yourself.
And in (form of an) answer, a shooting star will pass.

And when I take off, my life on earth will be at peace.
I only wanted to say my farewell,
Give you a kiss and see you one more time.

Promete que serás feliz,
Te ponías tan guapa al reír.

Promise that you will be happy,
You were always so beautiful laughing.

Y así, sólo así,
Quiero recordarte.
Así, como antes,
Así, adelante,
Así, vida mía,

Mejor será así.

And like that, only like that,
I want to remember you.
Like that, like before,
Like that, onward,
Like that, my love,
It will be better like that.

Ahora debes descansar.
Deja que te arrope como años atrás.
¿Te acuerdas cuando entonces
Te cantaba antes de ir a acostar?

Now you must rest.
Allow me to envelope you like years past.
Do you remember how back then,
I would sing to you before going to sleep?

Tan sólo me dejan venir dentro de tus sueños
Para verte a ti.
Y es que aquella triste noche
No te di ni un adios al partir.

Only in your dreams am I allowed to come
To see you.
And it’s just that on that sad night
I did not give you even a “goodbye” on leaving.

And when I take off, my life on earth will be at peace.
I only wanted to say my farewell,
Give you a kiss and see you one more time.

Promete que serás feliz,
Te ponías tan guapa al reír.

Promise that you will be happy,
You were always so beautiful laughing.

Y así, sólo así,
Quiero recordarte.
Así, como antes,
Así, adelante,
Así, vida mía,

Mejor será así.

And like that, only like that,
I want to remember you.
Like that, like before,
Like that, onward,
Like that, my love,
It will be better like that.

Ahora te toca a ti,
Sólo a ti,
Seguir nuestro viaje.
Se está haciendo tarde,
Tendré que marcharme.
En unos segundos vas a despertar.

And now it is your turn,
Only yours,
To continue our journey.
It’s getting late,
I will have to take off.
In a few seconds you are going to wake up.

Y así, sólo así,
Quiero recordarte.
Así, como antes,
Así, adelante,
Así, vida mía,
Mejor será así

And like that, only like that,
I want to remember you.
Like that, like before,
Like that, onward,
Like that, my life,
It will be better like that.

Translation Notes:

Perdona que entré sin llamar.

Forgive me for entering without warning.
Forgive me for entering without calling ahead. [*literal]

It is courteous to call ahead before visiting someone, instead of making unannounced visits.

I had to tell you that it isn’t so bad up in heaven.

Why not “no está tan mal“? Why “se está“?

no está tan mal = it’s not so bad
no se está tan mal = it’s not so bad (being there), it’s not a bad place to be.

Te ponías tan guapa al reír.

You were always so beautiful laughing.
You became so handsome (f.) on laughing. [*literal]

Así, vida mía.
Like that, my love.
Like that, my life. [*literal]

Vida mía” is referring to the person getting the message. It’s like saying “my love”: my life, my everything, my sweetheart.

Para verte a ti.
To see you (emphasis on you).
