Country: Mexico

Translation:

Ya no estás más a mi lado, corazón.
En el alma sólo tengo soledad,
Y si ya no puedo verte,
¿Por qué Dios me hizo quererte?
Para hacerme sufrir más
.

You are no longer at my side, my love.
In my soul I have only loneliness,
And if I can no longer see you,
Why did God make me love you?
To make me suffer more.

Siempre fuiste la razón de mi existir.
Adorarte para mí fue religión,
Y en tus besos yo encontraba [*alt: labios]
El calor que me brindaba
El amor y la pasión
.

You were always the reason for my being.
Adoring you, for me, was religion,
And in your kisses I would find [*alt: lips]
The warmth that bore me
Love and passion.

Es la historia de un amor,
Como no hay otro igual, [*alt: no hara]
Que me hizo comprender,
Todo el bien, todo el mal
Que le dio luz a mi vida,
Apagándola después
.

It’s the story of a love,
Like which there is no other, [*alt: there will be no other]
Which made me understand
All the good, all the evil
Which gave light to my life,
Later extinguishing it.

Ay que noche (alt. vida) tan oscura
Sin tu amor no viviré
.

Oh what a dark night (alt. life)
Without your love I will not live.

Es la historia de un amor

It’s the story of a love…

[Musical interlude]

[After this the different singers vary in what they repeat…]

Es la historia de un amor,
Como no hay otro igual,
Que me hizo comprender,
Todo el bien, todo el mal
Que le dio luz a mi vida,
Apagándola después
.

It’s the story of a love,
Like which there is no other,
Which made me understand
All the good, all the evil
Which gave light to my life,
Later extinguishing it.

Ay que noche (alt. vida) tan oscura,
Todo se ha devolver.

Oh what a dark night (alt. life),
Everything will have to be returned.

Ya no estás más a mi lado, corazón.
En el alma sólo tengo soledad,
Y si ya no puedo verte,
¿Por qué Dios me hizo quererte?
Para hacerme sufrir más
.

You are no longer at my side, my love.
In my soul I have only loneliness,
And if I can no longer see you,
Why did God make me love you?
To make me suffer more.

Es la historia de un amor

It’s the story of a love…

Translation Notes:

* La historia de un amor = literally “the story of a love”; a love story
* corazón = heart; it’s a term of endearment like “sweetheart” or “my love”.
* brindar = (1) to toast in celebration, (2) to bear, to bring about
* dar luz = to give birth, to bring about a life, literally “to give light”

Ay que noche (alt. vida) tan oscura,
Todo se ha devolver.

Oh what a dark night (alt. life),
Everything will need to be returned.

The first line is a straight-forward substitutions. Most versions says noche (night), and a few say vida (life). It just depends on the singer.

The second line is more ambiguous. The translation is fine but what do they mean?

Other Renditions:

Guadalupe Pineda (Mexico)

Eydie Gormé y Trio Los Panchos (USA & Mexico)

Pedro Infante (Mexico)

Luis Miguel (Mexico)

Luz Casal (Spain)
