“El Desierto” by Maná, English translation of lyrics

“The Desert” Lyrics by Maná
Album: ¿Dónde jugarán los niños? (Where will the children play?), 1992
Style: Latin Rock
Listen: YouTube, Amazon

Translation:

Ya me voy muy lejos del pueblo,
Empacando maletas, guardando recuerdos
De amor
.

Now I go very far away from the village
Packing suitcases, putting memories away
(Memories) of love.

Ya me voy, rumbo al norte.
Dejo novia, mis calles, mi gente, mi México
.

Now I go, I head (to the) north.
I leave behind a girlfriend, my streets, my people, my Mexico.

Chorus:
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Algún día yo volveré.
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Te prometo mi amor
.

Ay, ay, ay ay
Someday I will return.
Ay, ay ay, ay
I promise you, my love.

No lloraré mientras camino.
.

I will not cry while I walk.
The desert and the moon come with me.
No, I don’t know where the train goes.
I swear to you, my love, for you I will return.

.

I don’t know if I will eat, nor where I will sleep
But with your memory, from the cold I will protect myself.

Me den tu amor
.

Believe me, my love, one must be brave
And I don’t believe that the desert and the moon
Will give me your love.

[Chorus: “Ay, ay, ay, ay, algún día yo volveré…” (Someday I will return…)]

[Musical interlude]

No lloraré mientras camino.
El desierto la luna se vienen conmigo.

I will not cry while I walk.
The desert and the moon come with me.

No, I don’t know where the train goes.
I swear to you, my love, for you I will return,
For you I will return. (x4)

Translation Notes:

rumbo al norte = I head (to the) north

el rumbo [noun] = the route, direction, course

It’s actually a compass term that’s been incorporated into English (see: rhumb).

But with your memory, from the cold I will protect myself [literally: cover myself]

(as if the memory were a blanket)

cubrir = to cover

Creeme amor, se necesita valor
Believe me, my love, one must be brave [literally: valor is needed]
