“If You Leave” Lyrics
Album: ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?), 1998
Style: Rock from Shakira’s brunette angry rocker days.
Country: Colombia
Listen: YouTube, Amazon

Translation:

Y decidas otra vez regresar?

Tell me, what will you do after you try out her body?
When your mischevious curiosity dies?
When you memorize all her curves
And decide to return (to me)?
You won’t find me in the same place then.

If her brain doesn’t fill more than two fingers height, [*idiomatic, see notes]
And you find out that she doesn’t brush her teeth right,
If she takes the few cents you have
And if afterward she drops you, just as she pleases.

I know you will return the day that she leaves you in pieces
Without a pillow to cry on.
But if you have decided and you don’t want anything to do with me,
Nothing now can matter.

Porque sin ti,
El mundo ya me da igual.

Because without you,
I’m indifferent to the world.

Si te vas, si te vas, si te marchas,
Mi cielo se hará gris.
Si te vas, si te vas, ya no tienes
Que venir por mí.

If you leave, if you leave, if you march out on me,
My sky will turn gray.
If you leave, if you leave, you don’t have to
Return for me.

Si te vas, si te vas, y me cambias
Por esa bruja, pedazo de cuero,
No vuelvas nunca más
Que no estaré aquí.

If you leave, if you leave, and exchange me
For that witch, piece of hide,
Don’t ever return
(Because) I won’t be here anymore.

Toda escoba nueva siempre barre bien.
Luego vas a ver desgastadas las cerdas.
Cuando las arrugas le corten la piel
Y la celulitis invada sus piernas.

New brooms always sweep well.
But you’ll see that the bristles wear out.
When wrinkles cut her face
And cellulitis invades her legs.

Volverás desde tu infierno
Con el rabo entre los cuernos,
Implorando una vez más.

You will return from your inferno
With your tail between your legs,
Imploring once again.

Pero para ese entonces
Yo estaré a un millón de noches
Lejos de esta enorme ciudad.

But by then
I will be a million nights
Away from this enormous city.

Lejos de ti,
El mundo ya me da igual.

Away from you,
I’m indifferent to the world.

Si te vas, si te vas, si te marchas,
Mi cielo se hará gris.
Si te vas, si te vas, ya no tienes
Que venir por mí.

If you leave, if you leave, and exchange me
For that witch, piece of hide,
Don’t ever return
(Because) I won’t be here anymore.

Si te vas, si te vas, y me cambias
Por esa bruja, pedazo de cuero,
No vuelvas nunca más
Que no estaré aquí.

If you leave, if you leave, and exchange me
For that witch, piece of hide,
Don’t ever return
(Because) I won’t be here anymore.

No vuelvas, no estaré aquí.

If you leave, if you leave, and exchange me
For that witch, piece of hide,
Don’t ever return
(Because) I won’t be here anymore.

If she doesn’t have more than a pair of fingers in front (or on her forehead).”

It’s a Spanish idiom that means her brain fills up only two fingers high in her head – she is saying she is stupid.

You won’t find me in the same place then.
[I won’t be] (here) {anymore} in <the same place>.

me da igual – Literally means something like “it’s all the same to me.” It’s an idiom that means she couldn’t care less; she’s indifferent.
